Microsoft Windows Patch Update
Today is Patch Tuesday, so if you are using Windows auto-update (like me) you will be getting the replacement patch for the flawed patch of two weeks ago.
Note that Windows Update and Automatic Updates do not remove the old version so you should see if it is installed on your PC and remove it if it is.The following is from Microsoft. (Must have been written by an engineer because the grammar is really bad):
“Microsoft strongly recommends that customers who have not uninstalled the 2982791 update [i.e., the old version, released on Patch Tuesday] do so prior to applying the 2993651 update [the new version].” This recommendation applies to users whether they are having problems with the old update or not. The update addresses three Windows kernel bugs, two of which could result in privilege elevation and the third in exposure of sensitive kernel information.First, to check if the update was installed on your PC. Go to “Control Panel”, “Programs”, “Programs and Features”, and click on “View Installed Updates”.
Sort by “Installed Date” because KB2982791 will be one of the most recent updates. Or you can search for “KB2982791”. Select it and click on “Uninstall” and you’re done. (You will need to reboot after removing the patch).

So why wouldn’t MS remove faulty updates? Or maybe a better question is, Why should I remove it? Will it interfere with other programs even though the newer “fixed” update was installed?

If you have already installed the 2993651 update, I would remove both and install the newer update again. It’s strange that Microsoft would advise removing an update, but they have done this before.
Note that very few installations saw the BSOD that prompted the recall.
Also, if you are manually installing your updates, you do not need to reboot between updates – only at the end.

Since the new update replaces the old, the only reason AFAIK is, what if someone uninstalled the new update. Then the old one is still there and that update has a potential BSOD at boot issue. By manually uninstalling, then a faulty update is not lying in wait if someone manually uninstalls the corrected one.
