Microphone for FCP4HD Voice over
Posted by Kevin J. railsback on April 16, 2005 at 2:34 pmI just bought a 17″ PowerBook with the optical digital audio input port.
Currently whenever I need to do a voiceover I have to record it to tape on my PD150 then capture it via firewire. I was wondering what would be a good mike I could plug into my PowerBook and get good audio for voice over work on my documentaries?
Thanks,

April 16, 2005 at 6:13 pmHey Kevin,
To get a VO into the powerbook you have a few options with a preferred route to avoid any ‘Computer’ mic’s (very low quality) and use a good XLR mic that has its signal converted via an external A/D device to a USB or Firewire compatible signal. You should also consider a small mixer, and a good set of headphones to get started.
Audio is really important, and starting off with the best you can get given budget / equipment contraints will only save much time and money in Post.
We are using a few different mic’s with the Shure KSM27 a good option for most VO work (solid performer in the under 400.00 range). A small Mackie or Beringher mixer is a good bet (we use the Mackie 1402-VLZ), and for a converter from XLR to USB A/D convert I have used a few in past including the DigiDesigns and mAudio units with decent results on both.
Hope this helps….mobile audio is always a difficulty, and the success of the audio tack can make or break a well cut documentary…

April 17, 2005 at 1:10 amTroy, Thanks for the info.
I do have a Sennheiser ME-66 microphone.
I guess I just need something to plug it into.
Has anyone heard anything about this cable adaptor? GarageBand Microphone Cable from Griffin?
I also have a Samson Mixpad 4 that I’ve never really messed with. Don’t know if that’s any good or not.I was just thinking with the optical audio plugin on the 17″ Powerbook there had to be a better way than doing it how I’d been doing it.
