    Hi all,

We are a little post house in France, with 4 Avid workstations on Mac. Every station has local storage (RAID 5, miniSAS Caldigit).

I want to create shared volume with shared projects and medias, but we are on a very low budget. I can’t buy ISIS or EditShare, or a “all-in-one” DDP12 or T-Box…

So I think of course to Tiger-Tech Metasan and Metalan, to use with our existing storage and equipment.

What I’d like to do :

    – 1 PC with MiniSAS RAID5 24 TB storage (using my Caldigit Equipment) with METASAN on it as Server, and GbE card 4-ports connected to a GbE switch supporting 802.3ad aggregation (like Small Tree or NetGear

    – my 3 or 4 Mac with MetaLAN on each one, with Gbe card (2 or 4 ports), as editing stations.

    Is it working ?

If yes, I want to share Avid Medias and Projects, and I want 2 or 3 stations working on the same project, and I need the “Bin locked” works to avoid conflicts.

Is it still working ? I would like yes…

And the bonus question : if my budget allow it, is it better to do all with single port 10GbE cards and 10GbE switch (like the Netgear XS708E) ? Is the speed really better ?

I wait your ideas, comments, and advices !

    Thanks,

    Regards,

    William.

I know them, but we are on 10.8.3 and they are only (for the moment) Lion (Not Mountain) compatible.
Anyone has tried it “really” (I mean with real shared projects, editors, and long time ?)

The main problem I see with Vidsharx is on their tutorials : “For now, the bins and folders are NOT locked to specific users, so be very careful not to delete or change another users folder or bin/sequences etc.”

My editors are very good but there is too much risk to corrupt a “friend” bin accidentally, no ?

Bob, have you tried it ?

    Our project might suit William?

It will run on any PC based server using Ubuntu and is capable of providing a project/media sharing solution for mixed PC/Mac MC environments.

You can check it out at: https://www.indiestor.com

Please feel free to contact me directly if you need to know anything 🙂

The software is published on the GPL and won’t cost you anything to use. We have a rapidly growing user base, which we’re keen to work with and improve the software. If you do like indiestor, our web GUI will be shipping very soon for a small fee.

PS. Our software repository is currently offline for scheduled maintenance/updates, however it will be back online tomorrow morning.

It looks a very good idea, and bin locked seems to be ok.

I just have to create a Ubuntu Server with a PC and my RAID system. Maybe I will try.

    Thank you,

    William.

Hi, and thanks for the referral Bob. I just mailed you William, with a link to the Mountain Lion version, pre-release, but working well so far. The bin-locking is of course important, the text you refer to is a bit old… So that applies to the BETA-version. VidSharX has now protected user folders, with means every user (editor) has his own protected folder in the project. All other editors can open bins in that folder, but only the editor that owns that folder can delete or create bins or sequences etc in the bin, as long as they are in that folder.. A bit hard to explain, but really quite easy.

all the best, and let me know how it works for you.

    /David

    Thanks David, but

We finally have decided to buy, due to our existing gigabit network architecture, the MetaLAN server (and MetaLAN clients) software solution. After discussing with Tiger Technology B. Lamborelle and our Tiger reseller in France, DID Technology, we think that’s the good choice.
    (our) main reasons :
    – Block-level connection (and not file only file-level) for best performance on our network
    – after-sale customer service and reseller here in France with technical support
    – not “near Beta” product
    – reel Avid project support, “ISIS like” for editors
    – upgradability with growing cluster storage and number of editors/stations.

however, I will try VidSharx for a 2 stations “on-the-road” mobile editing solution, without a server.

I will give you a feedback here after testing (and more important : working !) with this MetaLan choice as soon I can, at the end of april or may I think.

Thanks for your answers and advices,

    William.
