I’m pretty curious so I’ll probably do a little more testing to find the problem with project 2. If I find out I’ll drop another post on here. Otherwise, ya, I’ll render it.
Thanks, John, for your suggestions. Great forum.

Well, I found the problem. At least I was able to correct it.
Looking in project 2, I began to suspect there was some track fx even though I couldn’t see any flags set. In a moment of inspiration, I decided to created a new empty video track and copy the whole offending track contents into it. Sure enough the super-saturation went away. I deleted the offending track (now empty), and I’m good to go.
Normally track fx is signaled by a brightened fx flag on the track header, right? There was none. Strange. Is there a way a track can be in an fx mode without a visible signal?

Woops. No, I didn’t fix it. Bad test.
Anyway, I’ll take you “good luck” for now. Thanks.

Unfortunately that’s all I can offer at the moment. Only you can figure out what went wrong in your project. Make sure there are no Media FX that might be messing things up. Media FX won’t show any indicator because they are applied to the media itself and not a track or event. Also check the master video bus above the preview window and make sure you are not adding anything there that you did want.

OK, now I have my work-around. I copied all of project 2, the contents that is, to a new empty project. If there was a media fx associated with the original project it was left behind.
So, I did ctr A to select all of project 2, edit/copy, open a new empty project, edit/paste the buffer into the new project. Now when I nest via drag and drop into a third project, I get good color in the preview window.
It would be nice if Vegas had a way of seeing what media fx is contained in your project.
Thanks again John and the others.

Timeline Tools (it’s free and a great utility!!) will show you.

In the Project Media view (Alt 5 shortcut), there is a column for Media FX and if that is greater than 0 then there is a Media FX applied to that media.

I did not know that info was available. Thanks for the tip.
I found all “0s” in that column, in project 2 or at the top level project, which suggests there are no hidden fx.
The cause of the funny color remains a mystery. At least I found the work-around.
Thanks for the tip Mark! I’ll be making good use of alt 5 going forward.
