  • MERGING EVENTS within one drive copies original files instead of the aliases

Posted by Alex Kenyon on May 10, 2012 at 1:31 pm

All my current media for a doc has been transcoded to ProRes using third party software and put in a folder. I named this folder “transcoded footage.”

When importing to FCPX, I choose not to optimize (of course) and not to copy media, as I’m keeping this Transcoded Media folder on the drive in which I am housing my events on. This means FCPX creates aliases in the event folder which link back to the files in the Transcoded Footage folder.

When I go to Merge Events in FCPX, the new Event Folder created for the Merged Event “moves” all the files for the migrated event into a new event folder. Only issue is that instead of just making new aliases in this folder, in puts copies of the actual original files there.

Not only does this take large amounts of time, but it will double my storage needs. I don’t feel like having to go and deal with this manually and create aliases manually or delete duplicate clips on the drive, but does it seem like that is what I will need to do?

    Thanks.

I ran into the same problem but have just been livin with it. It’s a big pain and something they need to fix.

Certainly is. Doesn’t seem to be as big of a problem when involving non-multiclips. Oh well.
