merging all audio channels into one
Posted by Johnny Laty on August 25, 2024 at 10:37 amI have a 5.1 surround file but I’d like to turn all these audio channels into one so it’s easier to work with on the timeline.

August 26, 2024 at 11:38 amUsually in order to merge all those audio clips into one would be to render the whole video alongside the audio clips included in the timeline. Then pass the rendered video back to Sony Vegas in a new timeline for example and there, you will have just one audio clip that was combined from several of them into one after rendering. Hopefully that helps or if it needs to be done in another method, you can let me know and I will see how I can help.

August 28, 2024 at 4:52 amYou can mix it down to stereo using audio editing software like Audacity or Adobe Audition. Simply import the 5.1 file, go to the mixdown or export settings, select stereo format, adjust the channel levels if necessary, and then export it as a stereo file. This will combine all the surround sound channels into one stereo track

August 29, 2024 at 2:45 amHi Johnny,
I’m not sure I would want to loose all features of 5.1 audio tracks, but to each their own.
You can do this from within Vegas without having to render the video.
And Vegas can put the resulting ‘submixed’ Stereo or MONO audio track back into the timeline as a new track.
Stereo will equal 1 track with two channels. Mono will equal 1 track with one channel.
Simply choose ‘Tools->Render to New Track‘ (Ctrl+M) and then choose an “Audio” only format (AC-3,FLAC,MP3 Audio,Wave(Microsoft)). Each of these types have caveats – some are ‘lossy’ compressed formats, some are ‘lossless’.
Once you make your Audio type selection, click ‘Render‘ and once completed, Vegas will drop the new track right into the timeline.
You did not mention which version of Vegas you are using but this feature has been supported for a long time.
Regards,
–Doug
