Mercalli 2
Posted by Scott Francis on March 22, 2011 at 2:12 amJust got Mercalli 2 and I like it!! HOWEVER there seem to be no presets like there were in Version 1. Anyone know where I can find any presets? I am having trouble getting it to track a pan while ignoring a jumping person…it continually follows the bounce…after an hour of trying I have given up!!
Thanks in advance for any help!

You’re using the wrong tool for the job. Mercalli is going to lock on to whatever is moving in the scene and try and stabilize it. You want to use a Point Tracker or a Planar Tracker if you have other motion in the scene that you want to be ignored.

March 22, 2011 at 2:14 pmAre those different programs? I am not familiar with them..Also I had been able to use Mercalli V1 for something similar, you could choose to have it pay attention to the background instead of what was in the foreground (such as shapes of the stage and so on) you could choose to harmonize a pan shot an it worked way better….hence why I thought V2 would work as well…

Yea, a point tracker is what programs like After Effects, and Boris BCC7 Match Move uses (although BCC7 also has an optical stabilizer like Mercalli too). A planar tracker is what programs like Imagineer Systems Mocha use. Point tracker is only good when you have a point to track and doesn’t leave the frame. A planar tracker is far superior and actually recognizes shapes and planes and tracks them. Both can be used for image stabilization.

You may be right. I never knew Mercalli v1 had this feature. How would it know what was the background and what is the foreground in a 2D image? What option enabled this in Mercalli v1?

This is what I would use….I guess I mis-wrote about background, but it would look at object contours and not pay as much attention to the other things…I see nothing like this in Version 2Scott Francis
