I have tried just about every freeware out there trying to find a way to have an image as a DVD menu button and I have not had much luck. I got close with “AVS DVD Authoring.” This software let me use an image as a button, however, my image is a .png file with some transparency and the software rendered the transparency as white. So my question is: is there any free DVD authoring software with which I can make a DVD menu with a .png as a button and retain the transparency? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Button creation (button = subpicture for highlighting) is hardly limited by the DVD spec!
You can use a maximum of 4 colors to create a valid subpicture stream for button indication!
Normaly one color is set to 100% transparency. The other colors are set for outline, background & (pseudo-)antialising!
Images are improper for the usage as button highlights! All other graphical ‘buttons’ with more complexity are realized with with the background image or video clip!
