I’m having some issues with memory while running Avid MC. I’ve been working on this machine for about a week, and all was well in the beginning. Now it’s running like molasses and I keep getting errors such as, “Your system is low on memory. Try closing some bins…” then Avid freezes. (Even if I only have one bin open.) I’m not running any other programs. Here’s what I’ve tried: shut down, unplug, leave it for 24 hours; I’ve turned off the anti-virus and increased the paging file size.

    Here are the computer specs:
    HP running Windows XP
Intel Xeon CPU 2.8 GHz, 2.79GHz, 3.37 GB of RAM

I have 43 GB of free space on the hard drive.

Any ideas of how I can correct this issue? Thanks!

Split the clips into more than one bin and try closing the bins that you don’t need. I know there is a limit of items that are recommended in a bin before performance suffers, but I am not sure what that number is.

I like to work with multiple bins and folders to keep my projects clean and tidy…that way, if I am sick, my replacement can find my work easily…..I also don’t experience the memory errors that you are getting.

    Hope this helps

Thanks for your response, Mark. I think something more is going on… on Friday afternoon I rendered out a 13-minute timeline, and it took approximately 1 hour to render. Later that day the system got caught in a “running low on memory” loop and I had to force quit the application. I shut down the computer and let it sit, and when I booted back up and started Avid, all the render files were gone. I set it to render again, and it took 5 hours to render the same 13-minute timeline. (With the client pacing the hallways like an expectant father!)

Today it is more responsive than Friday night, but there’s about a 2-second delay between when I click on the timeline and when the cursor moves to that position. I don’t know what else to do, short of requesting that the producer get an engineer in to look over the system. If you have any other suggestions, I’d love to hear them. Thanks!

Just a shot in the dark here, but I’m guessing if this system has ever been connected to the net that you may have some kind of malware… and/or other processes that are bogging down your system.

I would load up the task manager while Avid is running (if on a PC…I don’t know if there is a Mac equivalent) and see what is running and how memory is being used. Also, try opening a new project, maybe there is corruption in the project you are working in ??…Just a shot in the dark, but anything is possible.
