I’m changing out my 4×2 Dominator 1333 for the same but in 1600 on a RMA. My specs are:

    AMD 1090T
    ASUS M4A89GTD Pro
    Win 7 64 Home Premium

With rendering in mind and having the option to expand to 16GB RAM, should I go for using all 4 DIMM’s or just 2? This regardless if I have 8 or 16 GB RAM. I’m not sure if the hardware works more efficiently with 2 DIMMS or 4 and whether or not I will need more than 8 GB.

Reason I ask is with 8GB (4×2), I rarely ever see the usage top 5 GB during a render and that’s on an occasion. Does Vegas or can Vegas use 8GB or more? I will keep my 4×2 if it cannot but alot of users use 16GB or more so i’m curious if I have a setting wrong?

I’m not really an expert, but when it comes to RAM, more is generally better. Why we don’t see higher usage is a good question.

I’m not a RAM expert either but I don’t think anything you do with 2 sticks vs 4 sticks is going to make any difference. As long as you have enough RAM you should be good. If you’re not using all that you have now, then there is no reason to buy more. I have 8GB and don’t use it all but when I upgrade to a 6 core or 8 core, i will buy more just to keep my RAM to Core ratio at 2:1 (2GB RAM for every 1 Core of CPU). Other than that, people have done tests with using faster RAM and the results were negligible for video editing and rendering.

[John Rofrano] “but I don’t think anything you do with 2 sticks vs 4 sticks is going to make any difference.”

In memory-intensive applications like high-performance gaming, 4×8 will outperform 2×16 memory sticks in benchmarks. But the difference is so small that any disk I/O will instantly wipe out any performance improvements you might see.

But to gamers, one-half of one-percent is a big deal. They’re nuts.

I heard 2 sticks were easier on the memory controller but like what was stated…that’s likely for high-intensity gaming, but I don’t know for sure either as far as rendering goes.

With 8GB, I was rendering some HD footage to MPEG-2 and was listening to i-Tunes, converting NEF files to JPEG with Nikon Capture NX2,and opened up Google Earth and still couldn’t break 5GB of usage.

Sounds like a bottleneck somewhere possibly.
