  • Memory can’t be read…what does this mean?

Posted by Eric Paris on May 3, 2010 at 12:57 am

    Hi –
as I was watching my film on Vegas Movie Studio, an error occured which caused the entire program to close.
    The error read:

The instruction at 0x76f46e0a referenced memory at 0xc97ae6b0. The memory could not be read.

Does anyone know what this means? Are these corrupt files? If so, could this be the reason I cannot render my project? Thanks in advance! I need the help!

If it happens at the same place every time it could be a corrupt file. If it’s random it could be a bad stick of memory in your computer.

    thanks again, jr.
It happens in different spots, so maybe bad memory stick? Yet in other spots the program simply closes without any mention of “unreadable memory”. (with the aforementioned problem in my previous post).

Since I have so many things going on, I’m not sure what to do. :/

Any recommendations on where I should start?

I would search the web for memtest86 and download it and put it on bootable media. Then let it run overnight checking your memory. This is the only way to be sure that it’s not bad stick of memory. It may run OK once or twice so you want it to burn in for a few hours.

Is your system overclocked? Random memory problems can indicate an overclocking error.
