  • Memory & Cache settings…

    Hi again,

I am trying to maximize the performance of AE. I have read all of the details regarding memory and cache settings and I still can’t wrap my brain around it. Could you point me in a direction?

I have a Mac with 2×3 Ghz Dual-Core Intel Xeon Processors and 7GB of fast RAM. I have three internal hard drives. The Main drive is the boot drive.

If you can give me a performance recipe based on the above (and below) info, I would be very grateful.

The current settings in the M&C Prefs in AE are as follows…
    ———————————-
    Maximum Memory Usage: 200% = 3.0GB
    Image Cache
    Maximum RAM Cache size: 40% = 1.2GB
Disk Cache is enabled and Maximum Disk Cache size is 20000MB
The Disk Cache folder is a separate internal drive.

The Conformed Media Cache is set to…
Database: user folder on main hard drive
Cache: user folde on main hard drive.

the default settings should work pretty well for you with 4 cores and 7gb ram… it would give you a max memory usage of 3gb and 1.5gb ram cache per core (with multiprocessing enabled). you would then have an extra 1gb for system and image buffer.

if you run into image buffer errors, you could try lowering the ram cache a little to free up more ram for the image buffer.

disk cache will affect your performance. i usually leave mine off until i see problems, but if you are working in hd, you may need to leave it on.

if you wanted to tweak your settings to see how much extra you can get out of your mac, check out this performance test from barefeats.com. they benchmarked a 3ghz 4-core macpro (with 16gb ram), along with other macs. there is also a link to the totalbenchmark project files that were used for testing, so you can test your machine for comparison, and tweak your settings to see if you can get more out of your machine….
