Memory –
Posted by Dennis Dean on October 25, 2010 at 1:53 pmAfter creating a chroma key on the timeline in Final Cut I’m getting a “Warning-Frames Dropped” error as the system has difficulty processing during playback.
It provide several suggestions, including turning off unlimited RT, lowering compression data rate (not sure what to try here), closing open sequences (did that) etc.
It doesn’t suggest adding more memory, tho it does suggest increasing the speed of the system.
Would more RAM help?
I’m running a MacBook Pro Intel Core Duo at 2.2 Ghz 2 Gig of Ram. I can increase to 4 or 6 gig of RAM.
The project is on FCP 6.06. The project sequence settings are HDTV 720p (16:9). The Compressor is PHOTO-JPEG.
Thanks!

October 25, 2010 at 2:45 pmDropped frames are usually caused by an inadequate drive, too slow, too full, incorrectly formatted, or too many things happening at the same time. RAM does not usually have any impact on this. PhotoJPEG is an unusual codec for the format you’re working in, which might also be another factor. High resolution PhotoJPEG files can require a quite high throughput. What’s the file size and data rate? What are the drives the media’s on and how is it connected?
All the best,

October 25, 2010 at 3:08 pmI’m not sure how to calculate the file size and data rate. The project is on the PowerBook’s internal drive, which was fine until I got about 1:40 into a 4 minute project.
What would require less power than the Photo – JPEG compressor setting?
Would it help if I down sized the sequence setting from the current 1280×720 HDTV 720p (16×9)
to HD 960×720 (16:9) ?Can I switch sequence settings without harming the quality of the project? Most of this project is still images and laid over a motion background which I can put together in any size. There is some – not much – NTSC SD video and there will be lots of titles.
I really just need a 16:9 format that can be output for laptop playback. Anything I can do to reduce horsepower requirements would be helpful.
Thanks – This will also help me as I determine what new equipment to install.

October 25, 2010 at 3:23 pmWow, a lot of questions. If you have NTSC video I’d suggest working in DV50 anamorphic, higher resolution than standard DV, better for titles, but still the same frame size as your video. You do not want to uprez your video to HD. You also want to get yourself a good, fast FireWire drive to hold your media.
All the best,
Tom

October 25, 2010 at 3:31 pmI’m actually not increasing the size of the NTSC SD. I laid it into the timeline at 100% and 75%. I have a fast Firewire Drive I can add – but just learned my firewire port has gone bad – and the computer would not be back from repair before the project is due.
I need the 16×9 size – is there a size and compressor setting that could lighten the load?
thanks again – sorry for so many questions. Client needed the project before I could get the system set correctly.

October 26, 2010 at 3:36 am[Dennis Dean] “The project is on the PowerBook’s internal drive,”
it is NEVER recommended to edit off of your system drive. It has enough to do running the OS and applications.
And also USB is NOT suited for video editing. USB works in bursts of data and video needs constant data rates.
[Dennis Dean] “just learned my firewire port has gone bad”
Then I sugest you get a esata card and an esata hard drive.

October 26, 2010 at 11:03 pmZane – thanks, tho the only reason I was working off the internal is my FW port went bad unexpectedly – and I had to get this project finished.
Tom W – Thanks for your tips – All seems to be working well and the output quality excellent.
