    Hey all,
Our LA office just sent us a MediaPress MPEG Encoder. I don’t exactly know why…we do commercial work and I usually just export mpeg2’s thru FCP or Quicktime Pro and have not had any problems. Does anyone know what the advantages are of this product? Is there a quality difference when using hardware based encoding rather than just software based encoding? I am always excited about new toys…but I was wondering if the money would have been better spent on something else. Any feedback would be appreciated.

    Respect,
    Eli

We have a MPP card and don’t use it much – its encoded files are much larger than compressors and we have problems with the quality of the encode (green squares etc. showing up), tech support has not been very helpful. The big plus is that it is realtime which is nice for long encodes (problem is that our audio and video often end up at different lengths if it is too long!)

    John,
Thanks for your response…I will pass this info along to the company heads, and see if I cannot get us some more useful equipment with that money.
