When I check the source video from my Sony camcorder (HVR-Z5U) with MediaInfo, it shows that it is 1440 x 1080i or 1080p. I thought 1080i or 1080p was 1920 x 1080. What am I not understanding?

    thanks,
    robert

[Robert Strong] “What am I not understanding?”

Roll-Up Roll-Up welcome to the wacky world of PAR – the Pixel Aspect Ratio. Draw the curtains, lower the lights and breathe out slowly….. Ready? Really….?

Here yah goes : 1440×1080 is also known as HDV. HDV was the first consumer form of HD which was tape based. But HD is 16:9 aspect ratio, so the sensor had rectangular pixels (non square – 1.33:1) and when played back, the ‘non square’ pixels fill the 16:9 screen. Check your PAR on your HVR cammies.

Hi Grazie, thanks for your response. Ummm, so what am I looking for in my cammies ‘pixel aspect ratio’ …… a specific setting? My source files are showing as 16×9.

    thanks again…

Start a new VP project. Go to Settings. Top right hand corner click on the “Match” and navigate to one of your HDV clips and match it. Now look at the PAR. What are you seeing? What does the PAR say?

    Hi Grazie,

PAR always shows 1.333 for my files.

And there you have it. A non-square Pixel. That’s correct for HDV. the Pixel is w i d e r than it’s height. And that’s how you ultimately get your 16×9.
