I’m doing the offline cut of a MOW using the FedEx-the-dailies-on-a-drive method, and it’s making me nervous.

I’ll be cutting letterboxed DV downconverted from HDCAM SR masters on FCP6 and an Octo-Mac with a Kona LHe card.

Does anyone have some workflow advice that will make it more likely that I’ll be able to relink to the media copies in case some of my media is lost or corrupted? Under normal circumstances, I would of course recapture from tape. But I won’t have any tapes. A post house in Toronto will be keeping copies of the media files they send me in LA. Will I be able to relink to these media files in the event of data loss on my end? Do I have to be careful how I name my clips? Should I stay away from subclips? I’ve had more experience with Avid than FCP, and my forays into cutting with FCP have made me very suspicious of the FCP relink feature.

    Thanks!

    subclips might cause problems,
but then again, they are better behaved than they used to be,
and what can you do about it?

if it’s a movie you want it broken down into slates & takes.
if the Toronto Lab only captured whole tapes, and didn’t break them down for you,
    you’ll have to use subclips.

the last time i had weird subclip/reconect problems was back in FCP4.5, i think
however, speed changes could still be problematic.
i cant really say, i m just trying to think of situations to look out for.
it would be a healthy attitude to NOT expect the reconnect to happen instantly.
who knows, it could take a day of checking and tweaking to make sure everything is ok.

you probably know, but FCP uses the FILE NAME to connect.
it cant look inside files and find reel# & TC like avid.

so don’t go changing those File Names, unless you tell the Toronto people about it, and get them to do exactly as you do.
    risky

however, call the subclips whatever you like.

    good luck,
    nick

Thanks for the advice, Nick. So as long as I don’t change the media file names, relinking won’t automatically become a big mess. That’s the answer I was hoping for.

    Any other pointers appreciated.
