October 19, 2010 at 9:45 pmAny suggestions of AVS Video Converters that don’t cost $60? Seems there’s a lot of them available. Are none of the free ones any good? Thanks, George

October 20, 2010 at 12:06 amArguably AVISynth or VirtualDub are the most versatile video conversion tools on PC, and they are free, but they are fully featured and have a bit of a learning curve. I personally will use VirtualDub occasionally for batches or converting huge file like VOBs. AVISynth is all command prompt, no GUI, so I don’t use it.
I like AVS because it’s mostly drag and drop, has a nice interface, and converts almost everything. I support it and promote it because I’ve converted hundreds of files with it.Vince

October 20, 2010 at 4:48 pmBack above in this thread, in my Oct 19, 2010 at 2:20:55 pm reply, I mentioned I was trying to get MPEG Streamclip – AVI/DivX Exporter (https://www.squared5.com)to help me convert a mp4 file to an .avi file – or to a file format I could edit using Premiere Pro CS3. I downloaded and installed it. When I opened it, I noticed under “sound” it has drop down window with these choices:
Uncompressed
IMA 4.1
MPEG-4AAC
AMR Narrow
MPEG Layer 2
MPEG Layer 3
No SoundTurns out “Uncompressed” – as you suggested – converted the mp4 into an .avi where the audio worked just fine. Audio wouldn’t work for me when I converted using MPEG Layer3. So problem solved. Thanks. George
