First off, I need to mention that I am normally a FCP user, but am using Avid on a client’s system. It is fairly old, and that might be some of the problem. Its an IBM Intellistation M Pro. The specs are basically:

    Xpress Pro 4.0.1
    Pentium III-598 MHZ
    640 MB of RAM
    XP Professional V.2002-Service Pack 1

I think there’s some issues with the computer to begin with-But now we want to export the sequence, and I was having problems with the quicktime movie completing (‘failed to export bin’ message).

I noticed that when I selected all, and choose “render” to confirm everything was rendered, it always says there’s 3 clips to render. When I go through the various clips, they seem to render indefinitely, and it always says they need to be rendered.

After rendering one of the transitions again, it froze everything up, and then pushed some of the media offline (and the external firewire drive the media was on), saying:

“Exception: Sys_Error, Status 1117. the request could not be performed because of an I/O Error.”

Now, I notice random “Media offline” messages on different clips within the Avid timeline, with no logical reason. Since its on his system, I haven’t been able to investigate much yet about where the clips are. But I have had issues with Avid not recognizing the firewire drive at certain times.

I’m assuming more RAM should probably be added-could that be a source of the problem? Why would it want to keep rendering the same transitions?

Not to mention that when I connect a camera to the computer to digitize (or to try to back up), Avid slows down to a crawl. Lots of issues with his system, and I just want to export a full finished quicktime to put on a DVD! I’d rather not pick apart the system until we have a back-up of the whole movie, but its not letting me export anything, and now its got media offline!

Sorry for the long post-but I’m sure you can see my aggravation….

Any help would be appreciated….I did read around some other similar posts, and haven’t deleted the database files or changed the OMFI folders yet…..would that solve the render issues though?

    Kennon,

It’s always a good idea to delete the databases…something is wierd in relation to the Offline indications you are getting. You may need to delete the user settings and create a new one as well. This will at least clear some of the cobwebs that might be causing the problems.

I don’t remember if this version was stable or if there were cheap/easy/free updates for it. Maybe someone else can chime in on this version.

I would try to work without the camera attached as much as possible, and then attach just for I/O. Is there a deck template for that camera? If not, try a generic DV one to see if it helps. It likely will remove any deck control, but you can crash record once you’re finished. Are there local drives on the same FW bus? This always causes problems. Let us know…

    Thanks Joe,

I actually did all ready delete the user settings, and created a new one. It didn’t seem to make a difference when I was trying to export the sequence. But my client just told me that he did successfully create a quicktime last night, unfortunately it has “media offline” spread throughout in random spots. Gotta love the irony….

The last time I attached the camera, it was almost impossible to even output any footage. It would record for a few moments, then Xpress would freeze, therefore ruining the output. Its scary, because I always thought I could at least use the camera to back it up with Avid. Now I’m not sure.

I’m using a GL-2 to input the footage, and I think I’m using the XL-1 template that existed all ready…let me check on that, and I will at least try a general DV template.

I think thats the only FW drive on the bus though. I just use the other FW input to connect the camera. The rest of the drives are internal (mirrored) and one SCSI.

    Thanks-

Don’t forget to delete the databases…it might just help with the “Media Offline” you are seeing.
