I’m cutting a really simple, 3 minute interview project. I’m using a G-Raid 1TB external as my scratch. I’ve run into a snag that has me pulling my hair out. Any help would be very much appreciated.

I just launched the project and attempted to batch capture some b-roll off of a new tape. (turns out they gave me the wrong tape, and there is nothing on it.) So I cancelled out of that and saw that 50% of my media was now offline. It’s basically the 1st big clip out of 5 that is offline.

When I try to reconnect the media, and search for the file.. it’s not where it should be. The #2-5 clips are, but #1 clip is not to be found. I have only two other projects on the external drive – there is not a lot to look through. I’ve even searched my main hard drive, etc.. and I cannot locate the clip in question. I have searched exhaustively. That is my first problem. Did I somehow kill that clip by attempting a new batch capture? Seems unlikely that I could do that..

Secondly, and this is where it gets strange: At the top of the timeline, the piece starts with the subject talking, introduced by a titlecard over the video. As it begins, I can see the video of the subject – the audio is out, but I can see the subject talking – but when the titlecard cuts off, the video cuts to ‘media offline.’

How can the media be ‘offline,’ yet visible under the title card? And since part of the clip is visible under the title card – that’s telling me that the clip still exists.

If anyone can help me make sense of this, or may have a suggestion, I am all ears. Thanks very much in advance – –

    My best –

The thing playing under the title is a RENDER file. That is still there. The media isn’t. Why? Dunno. Did you give these clips unique names? Did somehow this batch capture overwrite the first clip because it had the same name? Do you give them names, or do they all show up as UNTITLED-1, UNTITLED-2?

Not sure where your media went; but the reason you can “see” your media under the title is that you are looking at a render file for that section.

Thanks very much guys for the response, I appreciate you taking the time.

Render file – got it. I understand that now.

As far as the now offline clip – It did have a unique name that the attempted batch capture should not have imposed upon in any way. Plus, it was the first clip (of 6) captured when I first started the project. The clips captured subsequently all had different file names – I don’t know how my latest attempted capture would/could have played seek and destroy with the first clip that is now missing.

Did I inadvertently point my latest capture towards or somehow over that original clip? And if it had somehow attempt to capture using the same file name, and given that the latest capture was aborted, would that then leave me without anything..?

It just seems a stretch to me that a) it would be able to overwrite the original clip – unless I intentionally named the attempted capture by the same name and b) that I would now be left with nothing – as if the original file never existed.

I know FCP mildly well, but I’m hardly an expert on it. Is there a protocol step or specific reason as to how I may have sabotaged the original file that is now gone?

    Thanks very much –

Frankly, I haven’t heard of this happening before, so I am unsure how it happened now. DOn’t know what you did to cause this, so not sure about what protocols were broken to cause it to happen.

Sorry. Can you recapture? You have the timecode…do you have the tape and deck? just recapture and all will pop into place. BATCH CAPTURE that file.

Thanks, yeah I don’t know either. I’m at a loss as to how this clip in question completely disappeared.

I feel like if I wanted to batch capture over a clip already in the project that I would have to take steps that I know I didn’t take with my latest attempted capture. Seems too easy that something could have just ‘happened’..

I have an end game, but it’s going to be a time burn.

    Thanks for the assistance –

This isn’t a solution but it might help you track down your missing clip.

Sometimes when I begin capturing something in a new project I forget to do a “Save As” – which gives the FCP project it’s name. This makes Final Cut put the first captured clip into a folder called “Untitled Project”. After that clip is captured FCP usually reminds you that you haven’t saved your project yet. So you save your project and everything from that point is put in a Capture Scratch folder with the correct name. That first clip however remains in a folder called “Untitled Project”.
