    Hi,
Just been for the conform and grade of a short film. Now got a consolidated version of the final sequence on an external hard drive. When I open this project from the external hard drive all the clips in the sequence say ‘Media Offline’.
Did a search on this and tried deleting the .pmr and .mdb files but no joy.

Two questions first of all just to clear up a couple of things in my mind:
    (1) The final project was onlined on digi-beta at MPEG50 quality – one thought I had was that my own system at home can’t handle this quality of file? Is there any logic in this, and if so, would it say ‘Media offline’ or something different? I’ve got Media Composer with the following spec:
    Avid Media Composer. PC with Intel DP35DP s775 iP35 ATX motherboard. Core 2 Extreme QX6800 2.93GHz. 256MB Nvidia Quadro/FX1500 PCIe 1Gb DDR2

    (2) Would opening the project from an external (firewire) drive result in media being offline?

    Any other ideas?
    Thanks,
    Paul

If your system doesn’t have the resolution it would say “Wrong Format”, not ‘Media Offline’.

Having the media on an external drive shouldn’t matter, provided it’s in the right place. Let’s call your external drive E:\.

If it’s MXF media it should be E:\Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1\[MEDIA FILES]

The 1 is any numbered folder. If anything is different, from the spacing to the capitalization–Avid won’t see the media.

If it’s OMF media it should look like this: E:\OMFI MediaFiles\[MEDIA]

Is this the file structure of your external drive? Does Avid rebuild the databases when you delete them?

You also say this was a consolidated project–the did give you the bin/sequence that was relinked to the consolidated media, right? If you consolidate the media and try to relink the full master clip, it won’t relink. You need to have the relinked consolidated master clips and sequence.

Otherwise, have you selected the final sequence and tried a relink? It may be work a shot. And try a File–>Mount All after you boot Avid to make sure it’s looking for and seeing the External drive.

    Michael.

Brilliant, thanks Michael. Tried re-linking and it worked.
