Media needs reconnecting on a batch compression – for future reference
I’ve just had a computer tied up for the best part of two days while 12 different sequences were being exported (once for dvd and again for the web). The usually reliable, time-saving, over-night batch compression didn’t work as for each new audio/video element or web setting I needed to manually reconnect offline files.
Now in fairness there were parts of each sequence that were multi-cam and I had recently moved my project media into a larger external drive. I know (now!) that can cause problems with sync – and I had a couple of those but they were quite easily fixable… its just that I don’t understand why everything needs to be reconnected just to be exported.
On the timelines themselves everything had been reconnected and rendered etc. and all played fine. No file names have ever been changed. FCP goes directly to each clip in its new location for the manual connect… What could I have done to allow a batch export???No huge urgency to this – future reference only. Thanks for all past help!

Most FCP users on this forum export either a self contained QT (I always recommend these) or a QT reference file ( I don’t like ’em cuz they all to easily go offline when the underlying timeline is changed or rendered) before using Compressor for batch encoding/compression. Export>>Quicktime Movie at current settings is a fast and foolproof way to create a QT that is identical to your timeline. In the future you should give it a try and then make your web videos and DVDs from there.

“Was everything properly logged, with absolutely no “illegal characters” such as “!@#$%&*( or ),” or are there by chance several files that were captured using Capture Now that have the name “untitled”? It’s these things that often cause the issues you mentioned.

Thanks for trying to figure it out for me David..no go there I’m afraid though..Everything was properly logged with no illegal chars… everything named on capture… am quite meticulous about that from past experiences! Have been exporting QT’s ever since with no problems – its nice having no nasty morning surprises!
