I had posted a couple weeks back about a media offline issue. I had been using Avid Xpress Pro 4.0.1 on an IBM Intellistation M Pro, with Pentium III (598 MHZ) and 640 MB of RAM.

The Intellistation is not a new computer, and it has its own issues. But, a little while back, it was having quicktime exporting issues. Then it would freeze up when a camera was connected. So there was no way to output!

Anyway, after realizing that Avid was rendering the same transitions over and over (which made the export keep crashing), the IBM Intellistation crashed, and it came up with little “media offline” clips throughout. Just in random areas. After looking with the media tool, I can’t find those clips.

How does media just disappear? Is there a good way to recover it? I would hate to capture all those clips again and have to re-edit them into the timeline. Plus, I’m not even sure the Intellistation would let me digitize any more clips.

Any help would be much appreciated.

The first thing I would try is trashing the media database files (after exiting Xpress Pro), and letting Xpress Pro rebuild the databases on startup. See if that resolves it. Usually when Media Tool shows nothing, it is time to rebuild those puppies.

Then after the rebuild, when Xpress Pro launches, perhaps using Media Tool and deleting pre-computes only for the project might get you back to a clean render/export situation.

Thanks for the response Jon. I actually all ready deleted the database files, and it didn’t seem to do anything. I let it rebuild, and the media still said offline in Avid. I also made a new user ID, and that didn’t seem to work either.

Would it be easy to replace all my titles, etc. when I delete the pre-computes?

Under the “Clip” menu, I believe, you’ll find “Re-create Title Media”. Select your sequence and use that command to create new pre-computes of your titles.
On MC Adrenaline there’s a “Re-Create Titles and Mattes” for material with alpha channels other than titles. That option may appear in Xpress Pro, though I am not sure. It may be version-dependent.

    Good luck with it!
