Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy Media Manager?

So I’ve been reading about, watching tutorials and playing around with Media Manager settings for some time now, but I can’t seem to find the best way to Media Manage my projects. I guess my problem is the settings. I’m either managing too much and taking up disk space or afraid I’m not getting enough. Here’s my questions:

When I select Copy, I usually include Render files, because it doesn’t add too much space for my small projects. But here’s where I get confused, should or should I not check “Include master clips outside selection.” On a 3 minute video, this can save a lot of disk space.

I then check “Delete unused media from duplicated items,” I use 2 sec. handles, but what about “Include affiliate clips outside selection.” Check or uncheck it? This will also save or add large amounts of space.

My process is to archive my projects with only the Media Managed content and then trash the digitized media, because I’ll keep a copy of the P2 folder directory. If I need to find a clip not used, I can always re-digitize.

Any help on the Media Manager settings would be a huge help. Sorry for the long post.

    Matt,

At best, wrangling drive space with Media Manager is a hit or miss proposition, and it wastes hours of time for almost anyone trying to use it for that purpose. Meanwhile, 1Tb hard drives cost about $100. So, I don’t know how much you charge per hour, but do the math, and I’ll bet you’ll easily realize that spending the time to get MM to save hard drive space is simply not cost efficient.

Thanks David. Unfortunately I don’t have the ability to just go out and purchase drives, even though they are cheap, which is actually what I do with personal work. But with my company, drive space is always an issue. For our whole network, we only have about 6 TB. That consists of all network stuff, print work and other junk. With my separate 2.5 TB Ciprico RAID system I have about 1/3 the space of our network. So, using Media Manager on all jobs actually helps to save hundreds of gigs spanned over several projects.

Yes, its a pain the in @$%, but I’m just looking for a little guidance in using this tool. For example, my current project with all boxes checked will be about 90 Gbs. If I uncheck “Include master clips outside selection” and “Delete unused media from duplicated items,” that goes down to 5.2 Gbs. With just “Delete unused media from duplicated items” unchecked, the project is 50 Gbs.

I just don’t know what the best settings to use are?

If all you want is the media used in the timeline UNcheck “include master clips…” and UNcheck “include affiliate clips…”. I would add a few seconds of handles just to be safe.

We probably media manage 3-4 projects a week (5min to 30min in length) and the MM typically works as advertised. We generate about 1-2 TB of media a week and ‘only’ have a 60TB xSan so stripping out the ‘fat’ from projects is a necessary part of a media management workflow.

Thanks Andrew for breaking that down so simple for me. The FCP user manual keeps it all techy. Its nice to hear it in its simplest form, like the Dummie books. I hate to keep draggin on but could you briefly tell me what the include master clips and include affiliate clips button does if checked. Or how or when it might be used?

If it helps, my projects usually have a few speed changes, which I usually bake in using Compressor’s Frame Controls, and various Motion projects. I also tend to keep my linked files for Motion.

Sorry, let me re-word that. What would an example of a master clip outside selection be? And how would be used in a sequence. And what would an example of an Affiliate clip outside selection be?

    Matt,

I’m not well versed in the different types of clip ‘categories’ in FCP so I can’t help you out w/a detailed explanation.

Hey thanks for your help anyway. I’ll just keep messing around with it until I’m happy with it. Thanks again.

Depending on the project and the amount of footage, sometimes I’ll capture entire tapes and use media manager to erase the media I don’t want.

Here’s a good How-To for the media manager if you’re looking for a way to make it delete unwanted footage from a large clip and turn sub clips into master clips.
