  • Media Manager – Offline/Online For The Road???

    Hi,

I’m working on a feature-length documentary that’s pulling over 2.5TB’s worth of DV NTSC footage, currently sitting on 3 external FW drives.

I need to go out of town for a week or two, and would like to continue working – but don’t want to shlep around 3 FW drives.

What I want to know is if there is an elegant way to make an “Offline Photo Jpeg” copy of my footage, edit with that whilst I’m on the road [off one FW Drive], and then when I get back home, RECONNECT/REPLACE my footage and edits with the DV resolution material?

Or am I asking for a world of trouble here???

    Thanks in advance.

    Yours,

    Wayne

Media Manager. Choose the COPY and RECOMPRESS option.

It’s in the manual…the step by step process. So I don’t want to type it all out again.

Have you ever worked with off-line RT?

We’ve been using if for the past three years. In fact, we’ve built our entire post workflow around it. Therefore, I have a “love/hate” attitude towards off-line RT. I can confidently state that you’re much better off “schlepping around” your three firewire drives than trying to round trip back and forth between full res and off-line res for just a two week trip. The amount of time spent “reconnecting” or replacing from one codec to another is going to be much greater than you can imagine. Then there’s the GRFX issue. Off-line RT is a 340 X 280 pixel size frame. You’re going to have “sizing” issues if you’re working with GRFX at this resolution.

Trust me when I say that you just don’t want to go there for such a short time.

Oh, and if you do decide to travel with those drives…. make sure you have a back up at home.
