I am happily cutting most days on FCS2.

I am attempting to archive an edit using the COPY function in Media Manager.
(include master clips outside selection: is NOT ticked. Delete unused media from duplicated items IS ticked. I have also nominated to include a small handle.

I want the new media clips to be only the section of media used in the edit plus a small handle.

I am discovering that the new media clip in most instances is identical to my master clip. Not just the segment used in the edit but the entire media clip. (sometimes I have only used a couple of seconds out of a half hour clip.)

In other instances Media Manger is doing the correct thing and is just copying over Media used in the edit. (and labelling these clips numerically)

Both these things are occurring when I attempt a single backup of a single edit sequence.

Can anyone offer advice on how to achieve a successful project backup.

This problem of media manager NOT shedding the “unused” part of the clip has been widely discussed on this and other forums. It’s a bug.

Typically, if you have created any multicam clips, this will happen. A workaround that we’ve been using is to matchframe and overcut the original clip into the timeline. When we do that, media manager seems to work. When we don’t, we get what you’re noticing… a “still fat” file.

haven’t heard of that Multiclip issue, before , Mark.

    here’s a possible solution:|

    with Media Manager
    – CREATE OFFLINE,
    – DONT Delete unused
    – Base media file names on: Existing file names
    – REMOVE multiclip angles.

you’ll get a new off-line project that has no multiclips.

    – reconnect to the media,
and now do the normal Media Management you wanted to do in the first place.

just a thought experiment, for now.

    ================================

the other number one reason MM wont trim:
    your clips don’t have reel#s

do a search of your entire project for TYPE: contains: clip
(if that doesnt get everything, use TYPE: does not equal: Sequence)

    all media will appear.
    sort by reel#
on the first clip without a reel# create a new reel# (NOREEL would do)
then select all the rest with no reel# and apply the new number to them.

    Well of course!!!
That solved my problem! It was way faster than match framing each shot.
Thanks Nick, you made my day

Well, that saved me 37 Gigs of back-up space.
    Thankyou Nick!

Both your suggestions solved the issue.
You were absolutely right about reel numbers. It was the clips without reel numbers that didn’t “trim the fat” and the ones with reel numbers did.

And the additional step of creating an offline also worked.

Many thanks, I have no more excuses for not backing up all my projects.

And just another thing, I was paid a lovely visitor the other night by burglar who took a fancy to my old Powerbook. Yes it was time to upgrade and no, not everything on there was back uped recently. I have a lost a huge chunk of my life. Huge.

    Back Up today !!!!

I’d just like to say this does the trick. Simply making sure the reel number exists makes all the difference. Thanks.

Im having this problem with multiangle clips, all the clips has a reel name/numbers, and I tried to do the offline trick, but both didn’t work for me.
    The project continues with 37gb.

Im doing that to solve another problem, an Apple Color problem, that occurs when I send a FCP Multiclip project to Color and when I send back to FCP I have some problems. People told me here that is the multiclip fault and MM would be the solution, but even the MM is not working here.

    Somebody please help me!!! thanksss!
