I am trying to media manage a 4min final sequence and the media manager in FCP 7.0.2 will not media manage correctly — it refuses to export anything besides the full master clips of my files and will not break them up.

when i select the final sequence (which is only a total of 4min long) and select media manager, it tells me that both the original and modified media will take up 56.6GB, regardless of whether or not i have “include master clips” or “delete unused media” selected. regardless of the settings i use, it always outputs the full original media files instead of the short clips from them used in the final sequence.

to further illustrate the problem, if i select a 2sec clip in the timeline and go to media manager, it tells me the original and modified media are 12GB regardless of whether or not i have “include master clips” or “delete unused media” selected .. 12GB being the size of the full original master clip that contains the 2sec clip.

i would really appreciate some advice!

I have also run across this occasionally and it is quite frustrating…. I have even tried to copy the time line contents into NEW project thinking it may be a corrupted project or time line… with no love…. so, I am sorry to say, I have not found an answer. But I am eagerly awaiting one here. I hope someone can answer this.
I have noticed that it seems to happen when someone brings me a project rather than a project that originated on my machine… In fact I have noticed that when I get projects that have originated on other machines rather than mine a bunch of little strange things tend to happen with the project (like renders acting weird, some (but not all) of the audio waveforms show up, and this media manage issue) but I can’t put my finger on the solution.

Make sure everything has a REEL NAME. NO reel name, then MM will include the full clip.

In addition to Shane’s tip, I’ve had luck doing this:

Duplicate your target timeline, then “select-all” in your timeline and right click>”make independent clip”

Now try media managing again. You /might/ also need to copy your timeline into a new project (I don’t recall off the top of my head)

    Hope this helps,

Ah, thank you! That’s what happens when you let someone else log and capture for you! Huge help Shane, I appreciate it.

Ahhh! That would explain why it happens with other peoples projects and not mine. I will look at some past projects that have given me problems and try to re-media manage after I put in “placebo” reel names.

    Thanks Shane.
