  • Media Manager – How do you copy just audio Media?

Posted by Mcnibbons on September 25, 2005 at 6:08 am

I’m trying to get media manager to create a new project with just the audio media, but the projected file size of the new project indicates that it’s taking video media along with it as well.

I duplicate my sequence and delete all the video clips. I then select the sequence and go to media manager. In media manager, I choose:
    copy
delete unused media from duplicated sequence
    use handles 2:00
    existing file names
dupe selected sequences and place in new project

I want to extract just the audio into a new FCP project to give it to a sound mixer, who will then use automatic duck to export to ProTools… the sound mixer says that FCP OMF 2.0’s don’t import correctly into ProTools, especially for long projects like mine.

I’m afraid that because the audio is embedded in quicktime files that also contain video, media manager is making me take the whole file, video inclued… I wouldn’t mind doing this if my video wasn’t uncompressed HD. It’s telling me I need 1.2TB to copy the sequence!

Anyone know of a way around this?

I think this is something that you need to plan for when you capture. Normally, unless you tell it different, FCP captures video and audio as one file, so trying to consolidate JUST the audio is something that it might not be able to do.

But, you can tell FCP to capture the audio and video files separately. In that case, I am sure than media managing just the audio would be a snap.

But I haven’t tried it, so…I cannot say for sure.

    hey there McNibbons

    regarding Media Managing your project:
i pretty sure you don’t need to be doing this … Automatic Duck’s Pro Export plugin will strip the video for you when creating the OMF, you just need to let the plugin work its magic, creating an omf of the original project sequence (or a copy of it). it’s a non-destructive process. you only send the audio guy the omf file, not the project and media.

and i’m not sure about FCP’s omf’s not importing into ProTools correctly either … FCP’s omf export ignore’s any audio gain keyframes, filters or effects and exports only the straight audio cut (rather than automatic duck’s plugin which keeps all that work inact) but other than that it’s perfectly valid omf which imports just fine into ProTools.

any chance you could get your sound-mixer to clarify exactly what it is that doesn’t work regarding ProTool’s import of FCP’s omf’s ?

    cheers
    Andy

My sound mixer has the Autoduck FCP export plugin installed on his system, so I was going to consolidate the project to give to him so he could do the autoduck export.

He says he’s experienced clips being out of sync in ProTools from regular FCP exported OMF’s… usually on longer programs like mine, which is 80min.

Depending on how much time I have, I might go ahead with the media manager consolidation, except have it recompress the media to the lowest/fastest rez possible… I just hope it creates new media, and doesn’t affect the links to my full rez clips.

Is your sound guy really experienced at this or is it someone you happen to just know.

The .omf’s are not out of sync unless there was problem on the editing end. Did he pullup or down the audio when he shouldn’t have on import kind of thing?

I can say with much use…. it works. I’ve done this on many timelines ranging form 5 minutes to 2 hours. It works on everybody’s computer system I’ve used to do this.

Sync out could be from editing 24 frame material at 29.97 and then trying to conform back. there will be errors of +-1 to 2 frames on certain clips..then sync comes back.

You’ve not really stated what kind of material he bases his opinion on…

    I suggest….someone new.
