You’re in real trouble here and will probably have to recapture material. Use existing is highly dangerous and should not really be used, and certainly not for a whole or large project, but used selectively. Your real solution is to get more drive space, bigger drives or an array. Don’t skimp and cut corners when you’re running short on space it will lead to nothing but trouble.

At this stage I’d just try to piece together what I can, get another drive and re-capture what’s lost.

I have to agree with this assessment. Using Media Manager to “save space” is not what it’s designed to do. It’s designed to archive an entire project or move a project from one system to another.

Using it to clean up a drive that only has 500MB left shows poor media management on your end. You need a much larger array.

A fair call… But boy, a media manager that to all outward appearances seems likely to be able to do this in fact does the opposite and sabotages the sequence you were trying to protect? Aiiieee.

For what it’s worth, no matter how much space I have available, it never seems to be enough… The data will expand to fill the space available, or something like that 🙂

Repeat after me: “Drives are cheap.”

A bare 1TB drive is around $240 for a Seagate Barracuda. A Hitachi is maybe $310. You can build an 8TB array for something like $2500 or $3k. You can build an indivudual 1TB firewire drive for around $300, or you can buy one for maybe $350.

thanks for your post – point well taken. I am new to FCP Regardless of my poor management, if Media Manager isnt useful for removing unused media, are there other applications or tricks that can help in this laborious task? As another poster commented, MM did exactly the opposite of what was purportedly asked of it – made a project completely useless. Purchasing more storage is next on the agenda, though it doesnt solve the issue of freeing up space on that drive without corrupting projects. I am starting to suspect that FCP doesnt like deleting unused files due to its complex file sharing protocol. Thanks, Peter
