  • Media Manager adds extra .mov to 5D files

    Posted by David Michael on August 2, 2011 at 6:33 pm

    Hello,

    I’ve been having this recurring issue and have been simply working through it for some time, but I’m curious to know if anyone else has experienced this.

    When using media manager to copy 5D h264s, FCP adds an extra .mov on top of the .MOV that is already there. So it will look like: MVI_2391.MOV.mov . Obviously this doesn’t reconnect as easily – any ideas as to why this is happening?

    Thanks,
    David

    Why are you dealing with the original H.264 files directly in FCP anyway? That’s a big no no. Do not bring in the H.264 files into FCP…it doesn’t like to work with that format well. They need to be converted to ProRes…either via Log and Transfer, or MPEG STREAMCLIP, or 5DtoRGB, or Compressor…

    Well, this is what I’ve done:

    1. h264->prores proxy
    2. edit->picture lock
    3. reconnect h264->media manage trim
    4. trimmed h264->prores 4444 via MPEGStreamclip
    5. “online”

    It’s step 3 that gives me the extra extension, it’s just a curiosity that I was wondering if anyone has a solution for.

    Thanks,
    David

    [David Michael] “1. h264->prores proxy”

    How did you do the initial conversion?

    Well, besides that, the workflow looks wrong to me. If you want to do offline/online with FCP, then you need to do it ENTIRELY INSIDE FCP. Meaning use Log and Transfer to bring the footage in as ProRes Proxy. Then edit, then media manage to an HQ sequence, or 4444 sequence (4444, BTW, is WAY OVERKILL for 5D footage. As is HQ. You gain zero quality over regular ProRes, but 1.5 to 3 times larger file sizes).

    But if you are going to Color, don’t use PR4444…there is a bug with Color where it clamps any 4444 footage to 98 IRE and 0 IRE…and brightening the footage makes it yellow, not white. HQ doesn’t suffer this problem.

    Your idea of using outside apps to do the converting is adding more work and headache to your online…as you can see. Getting the footage to reconnect is going to be quite a task….unless you invest in third party software:

    Sorry, bad plan IMHO. Got off on the wrong foot from the start.

    I did the initial conversion with MPEG Streamclip.

    Thanks for the tip about using Color and 4444 footage. I am already reconnected to the h264s, so I can go anywhere from here.
