media managed copy of film?
Need to send a film to lab for color/sound.
Film is a doc. There is a ton of footage. I don’t want to trash it all but only so much percentage is needed by lab.My question is;
What is the most efficient way of copying *only* the necessary bits to a smaller hard drive?
IS there an efficient way to do this?
I’m using FCP 6. (basically same as fcp7 I believe)

First off, make sure all your footage has REEL numbers. This is key.
Then, select your sequence and go to the MEDIA MANAGER, and use the COPY option. And make sure “only copy media used in the sequence” is checked. And make sure you have like 30-60 frame handles. Then copy this to another drive. This will make a sequence that references the footage on the drive you chose, and that footage will only be the footage used in the show.

What happens if said footage is not logged with a “reel number”?
Will I then need to manually move footage over to new HD?

Then the entire clip will be copied over. Add a reel number, and FCP will be able to trim it to only the parts used.

No…that’s what you are doing when you use the Media Manager’s COPY function. it is copying all the media to a folder on the new drive…trimmed media.
