Hi All, i’m very new to Vegas (just installed vs8 Plat.). I was using movie maker to do slide shows of pictures but now i have a digital video camera and i want to start editing video.

I have a quick question about media bins and organizing my videos. When I put something in my media Bin, i’m not creating a copy of the file somwhere, correct? It’s just a pointer so that I can have “collections” of media files to use in my project in logical groupings?

And if that’s the case, if I, in the future, change my directory structure or move everything out to an external drive, can I change the paths to a large group of those media bin pointers automatically?

I have all this video now and I have no idea how i’m going to store it all, i think i am going to put it all on my external drive and do DVD backups (that’s a LOT of dvd’s). But I’m guessing i may change how I do this in teh future after I get a little experience. And if I create an projects in the meantime i’m wondering how difficult it is to repoint to the new media locaitons?

And finally, I have used Picasa for all my picture organization and viewing. Is there a good tool I should consider for Video organization? Or is picasa work well for that as well? I’m really just looking for a good strategy now when I have so little and not have to rename and move tons of files later when I learn that I’m doing it all wrong 🙂

    Thanks, larry

[Larry Grady] “When I put something in my media Bin, i’m not creating a copy of the file somwhere, correct?”

Correct. It’s just a link to the original file.

When you open the project and it can’t find the files, it will ask where they are. You just need to point to the new location at that time.

Keep it on the hard drives. If you want to back it up, buy another hard drive. Of course you always have the original tapes as backups as well.

    Great thanks.

As for the original tape, I have a SONY DCR-SR62 so it’s all digital. I am afraid of hard drives failing so I want to have it in two places. And the reason for the DVD’s is to keep it offsite or at least not in the same room in case of fire or other disaster, but that is a LOT of DVD’s. I back up my pictures to mozy, but I just think video is too large for that solution. Still figure that one out.
