media 100 reading Umatic 3/4″ as PAL
I’ve been trying to input 3/4″ Umatic footage into my media 100, and it keeps wanting to read it as PAL. The message box comes up as I’m running the footage, and it automatically changes the hardware setting to PAL; I keep going back to the hardware settings and changing it back to NTSC, but to no avail. I’m inputing the video as composite, just as I do with 1/2″ and dvd footage, and with those I have no problem. Has anyone else had this problem, or have any suggestions? Thanks! – Lynne

M100 needs clean, stable sync to lock onto in order to digitize. Try running the signal from the U-Matic through a TBC first to clean it up, then into M100.

I’ve had the same problem when shuttling a 3/4. I’ve just ended up lining up the vtr a quite a bit ahead and switching between dig and program (I think this is from memory) and crash digitizing it in at full res its a bit of pain but the clips have been small and few.

Yeah, that’s basically what I’ve been doing too, but half the time it changes back to PAL before I can grab the footage I want. I’m wondering, can I run the 3/4 deck through a VCR with a built-in TBC?

Yes, you should run your deck through a TBC. The reason you are seeing this is because Media 100 is choking because 3/4″ sync is very unstable (we are not able to tell what signal is coming in). A TBC will help. In the linear editing days we had to TBC all 3/4″ decks just to get them to play nice together. Here in the office, I can’t even dub a 3/4″ tape to betacam because the sync is so bad.
