Media 100 HD 10.1.4 video levels and AE
The latest version of HD software apparently exports files with full video levels. I am trying to adjust workflow in After Effects to compensate for this. We used to apply a level filter to all incoming M100 clips to adjust to full lum levels and another filter on the final render to bring them back to 16-235. With the new software am I correct to assume the input adjust is no longer necessary? What if we just take full digitized clips and use them direct from the array on an AE workstation (copied from the array and NOT exported) … do we need to adjust those on import into AE? Any light anyone can shed on this topic will be greatly appreciated.

The new Full range export is only happening for clips exported from Media 100 HD to quicktime, not for clips exported as self-contained or by ref. Btw., why are you converting the files to RGB0-255 and back to 16-235 anyway? If you pipe a Media 100 file through AE without any changes it will stay in its original levels/colors, so usually there is no reason to do that. Additionally, the Media 100 V-Out preview also displays the RGB16-235 files correctly.

I have a a pdf I would love to get your opinion on regarding working with 601 levels in After Effects. It came with a book I have authored by Trish & Chris Meyers. Perhaps this is made obsolete bt the HD system. Could I e-mail it to you for your feedback? Its only a few pages long.

technically the workflow with stretching the incoming clips and compressing the output range is the “safest” way, but of course you do lose some brightness resolution (by scaling up and down again). There are some minor benefits doing it this way, but also some problems. The minor benefits are that you (probably) get a (little bit) more accurate calculation in the blend modes, that you don

Thanks for the input. We’ve been doing it this way for so long I will have to “retrain” myself not too! We work with AE on another system, but are monitoring everything on a NTSC monitor as we composite/animate. Thanks again for the time to review that material. Really appreciate & respect your input.

What kind of V-Out do you use on this system? There are solutions that expect RCB0-255 from AfterEffects for 0-100% V-Out…

Echofire. It is settable B/T 16/235 or 0-255. Not component out, however. One drawback.
