I just took over some projects from the previous editor.
I have been away from Avid a couple years’
    and am getting reacquainted.

    The configuration I inherited
stores project files on same drive as the media.

I know on FCP that is discouraged,
    slowing things down.

Does the same apply for Avid?

If the project is EXTERNAL, it can be located on whatever drive you choose. If you do that…back that up locally. If you choose the PRIVATE project option, it stores it…on a mac now…in the DOCUMENTS>Avid Projects folder. Not sure the exact path on a Windows machine, but I know they have a DOCUMENTS folder too…and in there will be the AVID PROJECTS folder and the individual projects.

If you want it locally, just move the project file from the external to the proper location locally.

Theses no real performance issue but its had practice.
Uf the drive fails you loose it all.
Use the shared location or external and a physically different drive.
Always backup the project to a memory stick or network location at the end if every session.
