  • MC 3.0 issues on new imac 27″, effects going offline

First, I cross-posted this on avid community forum so I apologize if anyone is seeing this twice.
I began a freelance gig last night editing at a producer’s house and entered into a world of hurt. I will try to lay this out as organized as possible. He just purchased a new 27″ imac and installed avid 3.0 on it (3.0 is not qualified by Avid, only 4.0, so this is a possible first issue although I have heard of folks cutting 3.0 on the imac with ATI cards). He has it set up to where the avid projects are on the imac internal drive and the media files are going to an external firewire drive.

It started out ok, I was importing P2 footage clip to bin from the external drive and transcoding as DNxHD 145. Laying stuff into the sequence, no problems until I added any form of precomputes. Any form of effect would go offline within 10 seconds or so. Started with a timewarp, we rendered it, watched it playback, suddenly media offline in sequence. Added a new title, played fine, then media offline in both the sequence and the title clip in the bin. I added a BCC glow over a transition, played once after rendering, then offline. I tried mixing down the video of the transition with a some handles, mixdown played in sequence then offline with the mixdown in the bin also offline. At this point I also noticed that two jpegs I had imported also went offline. So at this point, other than the transcoded video, everything I brought into the project had a shelf life of 10-15 seconds before it would go offline. I attempted batch importing these offline clips as well as relinking but in both cases the link path showed the red question mark. At this point I thought it might be something to do with the external drive, so I went into the media creation setting for the project and deselected Filter out system and launch drive in the attempt to have my renders/titles/imports go to the imac internal drive. No dice. Avid would not allow me to create media on any drives other than the external. I was pretty much lost at this point.

As additional disclaimer, this is my first time editing on a mac based avid system software only. At work we use PC based adrenalines over a unity system so I a little over my head at system troubleshooting on this imac. Any info is greatly appreciated.

My first question would be what bus is the external hdd connected through. and what is the speed of that hdd?

Its a 7200 drive connected to the imac’s 1 FW800 port. From what some others are saying it may be Snow Leopard. At this point I have suggested he bites the bullet and upgrades to 4.0, now I hope he doesn’t bite me instead. Thanks for responding, Jason.

yeah if it’s firewire 800 and a 72k rpm, it’s pretty much the only thing it could be. you should have him download the mc 4.0 trial and try it to see if it works as excepted

If he upgrades to 4.0 now, he’ll get the 5.0 upgrade for free when it’s released in June. That might make it an easier sell.

yep. I’m very interested in Avid mc 5. but I want to see a demo or alpha version of it. and it seams all avid people are away right, or at least none have email me back.

I think avid finally realize fcp is a competitor and made some changes for mc5

Thats exactly what I said in the email. Still wish I knew what was keeping the internal HD from being used though.

A little update of the situation. The client is still going to get the upgrade this week, but he messed around a little this weekend and seemed to resolve some of the issues. In addition to the FW drive there was a USB drive attached to the imac. It seems after he disconnected this USB drive, Avid was able to render and keep effects and other precomputes. I still don’t get what is going on, but at least there will be a solid 4.0 machine waiting for me when I start again on it later this week. Thanks again for responding folks.
