It means what it says.

When you create a layer based on a .c4d footage item, that layer must be the composition size. If you want to modify and animate things in the .c4d scene, then you use the controls in the Cineware effect and you use Edit Original to open the .c4d scene in Cinema 4D.

In Cinema 4D Light, make sure your render settings are 800×600 or less and aspect ratio matches AE project (16:9, 4:3). No error messages after I checked these and AE camera works now.
