    Hi.
Walter Biscardi, another great poster/moderator here, reported excellent results with “MaxxDigital ProAvio RAID units.” Specifically the 8 TB units.

However, when I go to Maxx Digital I don’t find those units. I can find ProAvio “Edit Box 8” models at other vendors but I would like to be sure that I’m looking at the same product that has been tested and found acceptable by professional users on this forum.

Can anyone here — and specifically Walter, when you’re back online here — give any guidance on tracking down the “approved” unit?

    Thanks for taking the time.

You can contact Ron directly and talk to him about them.

Thats what I did when I bought the exact same ones this week.

    Hi Matt,

I’m afraid I don’t know who Ron is. I’d appreciate more info about that.

Also, what were the main reasons that you selected this array? I’m about to make my purchase and I’m wavering between three or four different makes/models.

    Thanks.

Ron Amborn is the president of maxxdigital.

I chose them because of Walter’s and Bob Zellin’s recommendation.

    Hi Lee,

You’ve already been given the contact information in the other posts in this thread. I’ve actually tried to post their contact information in posts in the past, but it was always blocked so I stopped trying, but Ron Amborn is one of the principals at Maxx and a really nice guy to boot.

Yes, MaxxDigital needs to update their website to show those new boxes. I chose them because you can get speeds around 480MB/s in RAID 5 and well over 500MB/s in RAID 0. Atto and MaxxDigital have had solid tech support and service after the sale. We’re running two units, one connected to a G5 Quad 2.5 and the other to a MacPro Quad 3.0. Both machines are still running OS 10.4 as we’re still waiting on Adobe to be ready for Leopard before we make any move to that OS.

Now keep in mind that it will take approx. 6 hours to build the RAID 5 configuration on that box. We allowed it to do this overnight. But the RAID 5 is fast and it’s solid. We pulled a drive out of the unit while it was doing a 10bit Uncompressed 1080i capture and it didn’t even hiccup.

I’ll be back on the boards more regularly next week.

Thanks very much to all on this. It won’t be long before I have everything assembled and will be too busy editing to clutter the forum with specific config questions (though I hope other readers benefit from the discussion.)

I’m going to contact Ron and appreciate the referral.
