    Guys,

My previewing time and rending time is slow in AE. I have 18GB of physical RAM installed on my Mac Pro 8core 2.8 system. But in the AE Memory and Cache it only has Max RAM usage set to 3GB(100%). Why is this so? Shouldn’t 100% equal to the amount of physical ram I installed(18GB)?

    Please help. Thanks.

all versions of ae are 32-bit, as a 32-bit application the most ram that they can use is 4gb (3gb of a foreground application in osx).

to get around the 32-bit limitations, you can enable multiprocessing in later versions of ae (in cs4: preferences>memory & multiprocessing; in cs3: preferences>multiprocessing). this will launch a render engine for each available core and each 32-bit render engine being able to grab up to nearly 4gb (about 3.5gb for osx) of ram.

so if you have 8-cores, ae can effectively use nearly 32gb or ram, but the max ram usage will still say 3gb for the main application.
