I’m currently working on a project with quite a number of layers. I have just hit 320 layers and now I am getting the following error:

After Effects Error: Opening File “File Name” (-199) (10 :: 21)

It just happens that the file it all of a sudden can not open is the video file associated with Layer 1

Relinking the file does no good, as the same error file is given.

Any thoughts? Have I maxed this thing out?

    Thanks,

    Eric Jones

Well solved the problem, not a layer issue, but as a side note, are there a maximum number of layers? Can’t find anything in the manual.

I’m not aware of a limit to the number of layers in AE, but it’s certainly higher than 320. I’ve had thousands, it seems to depend on memory. Back with AE 5.5 on my old G3 with 384 meg ram, it would give up after about 700 layers, but with current machines and gigabytes of ram it will be much much higher.

Hopefully someone else will know what the error code is and how to fix it, sorry I can’t help with that side of things.

    hello Eric,

Please explain how you solved the error,
so in the future people may find a solution when they do a search on the cow.

Sorry guys it was actually a simple solution, the file was actually a FCP QT reference file that was not “self contained”. Something got tweaked in the file somehow (no clue on how) and I output a new yet identical reference file and AE was happy again. But thank you all for the help.
