How do I matte or use a photo that has a black background with a jpeg photo on it so I can use only the logo in my video project. I can resize it in pic in pic but just doesn’t seem to be very sharp. Can I use Photoshop to delete the black background some how and have nothing but the logo when I import it into Avid?

yes, you can use photoshop, but you have to add an alpha channel and save it as a tiff file. (search the help in photoshop if you don’t know how to add an alpha channel)

if you have trouble with photoshop, a much more convoluted process could be done within Avid.

Take your logo, add a color corrector, turn it black and white, and stretch the contrast to the point where your logo is now a solid white, and the black background remains black. Export a still, and reimport it and use as a matte for the original logo. Depending on your logo, it can work quite well, but, as i said, a much more convoluted process…unless you don’t have photoshop, then it may become a necessary process.

If it is a simple logo, straight edges, you could also draw a matte with animatte, and simply key it that way.

An inverse luma key may also key out your black background…depends what colors are in your logo.
