matte or keying/plugin tips?
Hey there everone,
So I need to key or matte out subject from some video clips. These clips are normal video shots of things/people in action. They are not green screen. The subjects move around the frame as well so I need to track them. So I am trying to figure out my best options for doing this with good results? Wondering if there are any filters or plugins for FCP I may not know about that can help me do this.
Or if anyone has a suggestion on an efficient way of doing this?I was thinking of doing some things with keyframe mattes, but that seems very time consuming on a motion subject. If it was just a talking head in the center of the frame it would be easy. But when it is action based how can I grab the main subject out? Thoughts? Links? Motion? FCP? AE? OR?

This is generally the only way to do it. However there are ways to speed up the process. (First, don’t dooit in FCP, use AE or something similar which is designed for this type of work.)
You may be able to use several different keys to extract different parts of the foreground object.
Mokey is a software designed for this specific purpose, but it is expensive. And your results may vary depending on the footage.
Using Mocha (included in the latest AE if I’m not mistaken) you can get usually get a decent tracked shape using the planar tracker. But most of the time you will have to manually fix problem areas.
No matter how you do it, it will be a timeconsuming process. That is the reason why you prefer to use greenscreen.

mocha for Final Cut v2 now supports mask shape export to Final Cut using the mocha shape for Final Cut FxPlug.
The concept is you can accurately track your mask shapes and then tweak keyframes for finessing. Export the data as XML and import into FCP to render.

Nice that is what I am looking for exactly, many thanks! I am familiar with rotoscoping and know how much of a pain it can be. This looks like it will help out a lot and is exactly what I was searching for.
