matte effect to make an object appear cut out with scissors
Hi all,
I’m having some trouble trying to achieve a certain effect.I have some footage of a person shot on green screen and I am going to make it look like stop motion cut out pieces of paper.
I have everything working except the cut out part.
I have keyed out the footage.
I have added my crumpled paper layers to add some texure.
but now I want to add the paper edges onto the character.I have tried a “glow” effect and then used “roughen edges”, but then I can only get organic borders and not sharp edges and straight lines as if it were cut with a pair of scissors along straight paths. (even with the scale settings very high in “roughen edges”)
I have been looking all over the place and can’t find any help on this topic.
I want to avoid manually making the cutout shapes by hand if at all possible.

I’m afraid that for that kind of straight edge paper cutout effect you’ll have to animate a mask- there’s no plug-in that I know that can do what you are looking for. It will be interesting to see if someone has a different solution for this one.

Here I am, right after I said that there’s no work around…
It may just be possible to turn the keyed man to black, comp that on white and do an auto trace. Use the animated spline thus created for a mask- eliminate some points on it to make it more rough, and “break” the remaining points to get straight lines and sharp corners…

This solution isn’t a magic bullet, but it is so much better than doing it all by hand.
It requires quite a lot of tweaking, but the outcome looks very good.I had to get the amount of keys used in the auto trace right for it to look good (not cutting off some of the body) when I changed the bezier points to linear points. This required me selecting each keyframe with the mask points selected and changing them by cmd-clicking them, which takes a while, but way better than roughly rotoscoping it.
