Is it a luma matte? or a simple alpha?

If you have a luma, you have to remember that you may be choking the edges that are black(or white if inverted luma matte) and that may not make a diference to the actual white matte colour.

On that case you have to precompose to be able to choke the alpha.

If you have Sapphire, you can use S_MatteOps on luma mattes directly.

If you wish to choke a luma matte with Ae’s built-in tools, you can use the Set Matte effect on the luma matte layer, setting it to use Luminance. This will generate alpha that can be manipulated with the Matte Choker.
