    HI everyone
i have a two files of an explosion one is the video itself on a black background the second is the matte video
so my question is when/why to use the matte video and not just use the keycolor or any other keying to take the black of the video and then make it a video with alpha?
    both technics work for me
so what is the most use of the matte videos?
    thanx in advance

Well, if nothing else, the matte has already been done for you. We assume that the edges of the matte were optimum since they come with a pro library. Keying on black still will grab black parts of the explosion and not probably not give you as clean of edges since you are basically keying on a luminance value because black has no color. Color keys which separate themselves by saturation, hue, and luminance have more defined edges than luminance keys.

But with stuff shot on black, you can use the free plug-in ‘unmult’.

    1. If you have the explosion on one layer, import the matte on a second layer. Put the second layer right above the explosion. Then on the explosion layer, set it’s track matte to luma matte. That way it will use the luminance from the layer above it (your explosion matte) as it’s own matte channel so it’ll cut out the way it is intended.
