Matrox MPEG-2 – Hardware needed?
We’re creating content for a Jumbotron and the requested delivery is a video encoded with Matrox MPEG-2 I-frame only codec in an AVI container. I Google around and didn’t find much about the codec. Is this codec locked to the Matrox hardware? From what I can tell it is and it also requires a PC.
Please correct me if I’m wrong.

As a quick test, put on a computer that doesn’t have Matrox installed and then see if VLC will play it.

Sorry, I should have elaborated. I don’t have any content encoded with the Matrox encoder. I was told that the jumbotron system the content is being created for will require these specs.

Hmm, it may mean they’re locked into a specific player tied to Matrox hardware.

You may be right. I see that this piece of Matrox hardware adds the codec for PC at least.

Also for PC, there is their M.Key.100 USB dongle which adds and allows use of the Matrox codecs on systems without other Matrox video hardware.
Matrox M.Key/100 is a USB dongle with associated software that allows you to use all the Matrox Video for Windows (VFW) software codecs on a system that doesn’t have Matrox video hardware. With Matrox M.Key/100 connected to your computer’s USB port, all the Matrox VFW codecs are available on your system and behave as though you have Matrox video hardware, such as Matrox Axio or Matrox DSX, installed in your computer.
This means that you can render and play back Matrox .avi files with your VFW programs using any Matrox VFW codec, including those codecs that are available only to users that have Matrox video hardware. The following Matrox VFW codecs are available with Matrox M.Key/100:
• Matrox DV/DVCAM.
• Matrox DVCPRO.
• Matrox DVCPRO5O.
• Matrox DVCPRO HD.
• Matrox MPEG-2 I-frame in SD or HD resolution.
• Matrox MPEG-2 I-frame + Alpha in SD or HD resolution.
• Matrox Uncompressed in SD or HD resolution.
• Matrox Uncompressed + Alpha in SD or HD resolution.
• Matrox Offline HD.
• Matrox M-JPEG (for legacy DigiSuite files).
• Matrox HDV (for playback only of Matrox HDV files). -

Just to follow up on this…
I got the needed codecs from the media guys at the stadium. They were PC only and seemed to be useless without either the Matrox hardware or CrossFire software.
What I ended up doing was exporting an uncompressed AVI from QT Pro. The stadium then handled the transcode when they ingested the vid into their system.
