    1) Can you please describe the workflow in detail for how you take advantage of the MAX hardware compression with FCP X? Am I to understand that you have to export a QuickTime .mov first from FCP X, close the program, open this .mov in Compressor and then use the MAX presets?

    2) Doesn’t this slow the workflow down rather than speed it up? Maybe I’m missing something but in FCP 7 you didn’t have to export anything first to use the MAX hardware compression in Compressor.

I’m really liking FCPX but don’t see how I can use the MAX compression to its fullest with this setup. Seems like it will take me just as long to export full-res .mov files from FCPX then open them with Compressor as it would just to use the CPU’s compression and utilizing the Share commands and never having to create the first export. Thoughts?

In FCP X you can use: Export Using Compressor Settings.
If you choose that one (Compressor 4) and choose a Matrox Option, do you get the speed you want?

    (I haven’t tried it myself)

According to Matrox you can’t have both FCPX and Compressor open at the same time when using the MAX hardware compressor. I guess I’m asking anyone that uses FCPX with the Matrox MAX accelerator how they do it and if it is still faster?

Aha, with the Matrox it is indeed so if you use it for monitoring, you can’t use it for MAX. Damn. Didn’t think of that.

It’s always been the case that you can only use the Matrox hardware to either 1) view your timeline, or 2) use the max chip to compress. So it’s not much different than before.

I have used Compressor 3 to compress using Matrox Max while FCPX is open.

I’m not using an external screen. According to Joe at Matrox Tech Support:

“Unfortunately at this time the answer is no; you can’t share a job between FCPX and Compressor 4 using Matrox MAX. The reason is that FCP X works very differently than FCP 7 and this feature could not be implemented.”

Can’t you still “send to compressor”? It’s similar to using compressor settings inside FCPX, but it just has to launch the app…
