    Hi all
I want to create a score board, the type you get at sports events etc. I want to have simple animations on it, but rather than create a matrix of lights that i would have to key on and off, i was trying to think of another quicker way of doing it? Any suggestions anyone? I considered the idea of having a mask with holes in it and just putting my animation behind it, but im not convinced it would get the correct look.

If anyone can point me in the direction of a tutorial that might help, or any other suggestions, itd be much appreciated.

    Thanks again.

When I do things like this I usually begin by using a Stylize > Mosaic effect to limit the give the video a lower resolution look. The Mosaic effect is flexible, however, and I’ve gotten away with looks ranging in ‘quality’ from 8-bit video game characters to old-school pixelated web video.

Next I usually put a layer with a black Generate > Grid effect applied above this and tweak the settings so that the grid lines fall on the boundaries of the mosaic blocks (this can be done automatically with expressions if you’re up to it). Play with the size of the grid lines and apply a Blur & Sharpen > Box Blur (softens the lines) and maybe a Noise > Median effect (rounds and smooths the lines). Also you can reduce the opacity of the lines and/or use a blending mode such as overlay or soft light.

    Cheers Darby
That sounds about right for what im after. Its the old school one colour look im going for.

Any thoughts on doing it with circles rather than squares?

I’ve got some filters that will do circles but they’re from DigiEffects. Not at my machine to tell you if there are any in they stock pacakge.
Must be a way to create some circle mattes and then use a tiling filter to replicate a few thousand times.

If you use CC Ball Action and adjust the ball size, etc, add some glow and whatnot and you get a pretty believable matrix grid look. Used this many times.

[Ian Collister] “Any thoughts on doing it with circles rather than squares?”

The Noise > Median effect applied to a Grid effect should make the lines sort of melt into circular shapes.

You might want to check out Boris Continuum’s plugins. There’s one in particular, BCC5 Led wich might be decently suitable for such purposes… if you’re willing to make the investment that is.

CC Ball Action is a great suggestion.
You can stack multiple copies of the layer and end up with a 3d illusion in your giant monitor. A camera can fly around it.

there was a project here a few years ago that used Ball Action to create a jumbotron effect. You could try searching for CC BALL ACTION and see what trheads turn up.

Hey, yeah, Aarohn Rab. did a podcast on that (the ball action) but I also remember Steve Holmes using Brush Stokes. It’s not as detailed as the Ball Action method but it’s quicker… you can get a Larry King type of back ground pretty easilty.

    Brush Strokes, Stroke Length = 1, Density = 0, Randomness = 0,

but the kicker is the “Paint Surface” pop up… change this to Paint on Transparent (or white or black.. depending on what you’re doing, but that way, it’ll knock out the original image from between the ROUND ‘brush strokes’).

    — I was playing with it and you can animate your text (I don’t know if this is what the original poster had in mind…) but you can of course, add brush strokes to an adjustment layer. I threw in an image of a world map with a mask on the bottom of that to reveal my animated ‘stock tickers’ … then threw and adj layer on top of the stack with Brush strokes (which is cool to just turn off while you edit the other layers).

Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.
