    Hi. I’m creating a see-through globe for a client.
Here’s what it needs to look like:

    https://www.pointcproductions.com/exampleglobe.jpg

Here’s what I have set up in C4D:
I have 2 sphere in my scene. One sphere has the map/countries on it. The other sphere is the blue “globe”, where I have the transparency on to see through it so that the countries are visible on the back of the “globe”.

Here’s what my globe looks like:

As you can see, my colors are way off. I have a gradient on the luminance tab of the materials editor for my “globe” colors. When I turn the transparency on, so that you can see through the globe, it loses it’s vibrant colors.
So how do you keep your colors, and have an object be transparent at the same time?

Also, I’m trying to get the refraction/bend look of the transparent sphere as well. When I turn refraction on, in the transparency tab, all it does is make my sphere are pixelated and noisy.

I appreciate any advice you have to offer.

What version of Cinema are you using? Transparency changed considerably between R10 and R11.

In either case, you should turn off the luminance and color channels and set the color in the transparency channel. That should bring out the bright color.

I don’t know why you are getting artifacts in with refraction unless maybe there’s a texture on an object behind the transparent object, in which case it could be that it’s getting magnified and thus pixelated. You’ll also need to turn on Best AA if there’s anything behind the transparent object because geometry AA doesn’t work through transparency.

Hi Adam. Thanks for the response. I’m using R11.
As far as the transparency issue. I’m still struggling getting the look I need.
I think I’m confusing myself trying to do this because I’m been attempting to do it for days now. Shouldn’t be this hard.
To get the look of the first globe (https://www.pointcproductions.com/exampleglobe.jpg), would you use one sphere to do that or two?
I’m still not getting the colors and the transparency to work right together.
What would be your work flow, as far as materials, to get that glassy/transparent look, as well with the map and color to it?

    Hi Josh,

The image link isn’t working, so I can’t tell exactly what you’re after.

Ok. Here’s the glassy looking globe I’m trying to recreate in C4D.

Here’s what mine is looking like now:

I’ve pretty much got the colors down now, which I solved by adding a 3rd layer, a 3rd sphere. Anyway, what I can’t though is the refractive/glass/shiny look.

When I turn the refraction up, in the transparency tab in material editor, this is all i get:

Just a noisy version of what I had before.

    Thanks,

    Josh

The first image still isn’t showing up.
