  • Matching frame back to tape (navigation question)

Posted by Ron James on August 21, 2006 at 5:25 pm

I’ve been using Avid DV Xpress to do some capturing on a Mac 1.8 G5 and have a question about navigation:

When capturing, I like to match a frame or two from the captured file(s) back to the source tape to make sure the timecode is solid.

In Final Cut Pro, what I’d do is this: park the playhead on a frame in the captured file, copy the timecode, then open the Log & Capture window and paste the timecode in the current-frame field. FCP will then cue the tape to that exact frame automatically.

I can’t figure out an easy way to do this in Avid Xpress, though I’m guessing there’s probably a way. Is there anyway to paste (or even punch in) a value in the Capture window to get the deck to cue up to a frame? Or is there a different mode/window I should be in? If anyone could tell me how they’d go about doing this in an efficient way, I’d be very grateful.

    Thanks a lot!

I haven’t tried this, and I’m not in front of the system right now, so it might not work, but…

    1. Load your clip into your source window.
    2. Open your Digitize/Capture tool
    3. Load your tape and select the right tape name
    4. Drag your master clip from your bin or source monitor to your Digitize/Capture window.

It should load the timecode information into the timecode boxes. Make sure you have deck control and hit Q (the Go To In button on the keyboard–might be different if you remapped it). It will cue up to that frame and you can check to make sure they match.

Thanks a lot for the quick response. I’ll give this a try. It sounds like it makes perfect sense.
