Let me describe my problem, and hopefully someone has some advice (this may be something for John Rofrano, since he is very familiar with Boris products).

I have a video clip with a wine bottle pouring some wine. However, the foil at the top of the bottle was not torn off neatly so it’s kind of unsightly. So, in Photoshop I made a very convincing looking bottle top for it, and I’d like to position it in the video so that it looks like the bottle has a nice, clean, tidy top as it’s pouring.

At first I used keyframing but that was taking a very long time and the results were too jittery. Then I tried Boris Match Move. The results were very good, much better than what I could do by keyframing.

However, the results still aren’t perfect. There is much less jittering, but a hint of it is still there. However, the biggest problem is that as the bottle tilts slightly, the bottle top needs to tilt as well, but Match Move doesn’t seem to be designed to compensate for that.

Yes, it would probably be easier to just reshoot the video the right way, but at this point it isn’t an option.

Are there settings in Match Move that will help make this more accurate, or is there another solution?

Boris Match Move is very good, but sometimes i also
use the Motion Tracking feature that comes standard in
After Effects for complex tasks like what you have there.
Even Mocha, but that’s another story.

I think you might want “corner pinning” in Boris.
Here’s the tutorial John did for it.

    Brian,

For things like your issue, I’ve found that sometimes I can hide stuff easier if I use a bigger chunk of what I’m trying to hide; in other words, your little cap may be more noticeable hopping around all by itself rather than if you were able to include more of the neck of the bottle with it as well. I realize your bottle may be clear, but if it’s a dark green or brown or black, you might be able to get away with it.

Corning pinning does a lot more in the three axis. The key is finding a good set of 4 corners. To reduce jitters (I’ve yet to master this)I’m assuming you rendered your keyframes in Full size preview. Also, you might try playing with the preprocess sliders to bring out your points and make them easier to track. Like I said, I’ve yet to master a perfect move so I end up adding camera shake or a pan-crop move to the whole thing to hide imperfections.

Thanks for the suggestion about After Effects, Steve. I think I am going to give Adobe’s subscription service a try.

However, in the meantime, I was able to get Match Move to work well enough. I simply selected the portion of the video that Match Move did the best job on (only about 2 seconds was needed). Actually, I’m rather proud of how it turned out. Being a video amateur (masquerading as a professional), the results are quite a step forward for me.

Here is a video showing the before and after:

That looks beautiful. No one would even be looking for that let alone be able to catch it. Nice job.
